Grief is a normal human emotion, but it should be transitory, and when it becomes chronic and debilitating it may be time to get support and mental health help. Prolonged grief is like being in an ongoing, heightened state of mourning that keeps you from healing. Signs and symptoms of complicated grief may include intense sorrow, pessimism, and despair about life in general, being easily distracted, sleep disturbances, changes in eating habits, and withdrawal from normal life activities that used to bring joy.
I help those experiencing prolonged grief by exploring their reactions and symptoms to the loss of their loved one, and by helping them learn how to both honor and adjust to the loss so they may begin to find resolution, acceptance, and healing.
Experiencing occasional anxiety or feeling down occasionally is normal. However, when worry, fear, and despondence become more frequent and regularly interrupt daily life it is important to get assistance. Common signs of anxiety include feeling restless or tense, ruminating over decisions, having a sense of impending doom, and even physical sensations like rapid heart rate, sweating, and gastrointestinal problems. Similarly, signs of depression also may include feelings of sadness or hopelessness, but manifest physically in other ways, like having low energy, loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed, or sleeping too much.
When working with clients presenting with anxiety, depression, or both (which is very common) I use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in combination with other treatment modalities (psychodynamic, interpersonal, and supportive) to help relieve negative symptoms and provide coping strategies that are simple and effective.
Addiction is characterized by a compulsive need for substances (such as drugs or alcohol) or behaviors (such as gambling or excessive internet use) that interfere with daily life and social functioning.
Substance addictions often lead to both physical and psychological dependency, requiring comprehensive treatment that may include medical detoxification, medication-assisted therapy, and counseling.
Behavioral addictions, while not involving a physical substance, can be equally disruptive. These addictions are best addressed through psychotherapy, the development of healthier coping strategies, and strong support systems.
If someone you care about is struggling with addiction, it’s essential to foster a supportive, non-judgmental environment while encouraging them to seek professional help. Compassion, patience, and consistency can play a powerful role in helping someone move toward recovery.
Life transitions such as career changes, becoming a new parent, going through a divorce, starting school, or experiencing the loss of a loved one can be overwhelming and challenging. I offer compassionate support and practical strategies to navigate these significant changes with resilience and clarity. By providing a safe space for exploration and reflection, I will help you manage the emotional and psychological impacts of these transitions, empowering you to adapt, grow, and find balance during these pivotal moments in your life.
